The Chemical Industry must Recycle its Wastewater
Industrial water waste is a major issue as to why the world is running short of water resources. Chemical companies use huge amounts of water in their production processes. Laws state that any metals or chemicals found in the wastewater must be removed and water treated before it can be reintroduced into bodies of water.
Water use in the chemical industry occurs in various stages of manufacturing, including:
1. Raw Material Processing: Water is often used in the extraction and processing of raw materials required for chemical production.
2. Chemical Synthesis: Water is a common solvent and reagent in chemical reactions. Some chemical processes may require substantial amounts of water.
3. Cooling and Heating: Many chemical processes involve the use of water for cooling or heating equipment.
4. Cleaning and Washing: Equipment cleaning and product purification processes may involve water.
To combat the amount of water wasted throughout the production process, it is vital to recycle and reuse this water back into the company for many reasons: such as reducing water and energy bills, to improve your company’s public image, to comply with water regulations, and to protect natural resources. The chemical industry often generates wastewater containing by-products and residues from manufacturing processes. Proper wastewater treatment is crucial to comply with environmental regulations. Gov.UK requires that you must use ‘appropriate treatment’ for discharges from agglomerations of:
- less than 2,000 PE to freshwaters (including groundwater) or estuaries.
- less than 10,000 PE to coastal waters
You must use secondary treatment on all discharges from agglomerations of:
- more than 2,000 PE to freshwaters (including groundwater) or estuaries.
- more than 10,000 PE to coastal water
and you must use more advanced tertiary treatment for agglomerations of more than 10,000 PE in sensitive areas and their catchments where the discharge contributes significantly to nutrient load.
